Q&A: Benjamin C. Lee, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania
In the world of AI and high-performance computing (HPC), research is key to progress. And Benjamin Lee is in the thick of things. Now a visiting researcher at Google in the Global Infrastructure Group, as well as a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering and the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, he has held visiting research positions at Meta AI, Microsoft Research, Intel, and at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
A longtime expert in computer architecture (think microprocessors, memories, and datacenters), Benjamin Lee specializes in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, with a focus on using AI to better design and manage computer systems.
Dr. Lee was an Assistant and then Associate Professor at Duke University. He received his post-doctorate at Stanford University, his S.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and his B.S. from the University of California at Berkeley.
This interview was conducted via email initiated by Mary Jander in March 2026.
